I know that some Ivey branches have an oral history of Portuguese ancestry; in SC, there was the famous Thomas Hagans court case. Growing up in NC, I'd always heard Portuguese was used as code for "mixed race". 23andMe recently updated their Ancestry Composition, and my 3% Iberian is now identified as Portuguese! I have no known Iberian ancestry, but perhaps there was something to those old stories?

Re: PortugueseI believe that I must. On Ancestry I show 8% Iberian Peninsula at a high confidence. I have read that Ancestry is getting ready to update their site and Iberian will be broken down into Spanish & Portuguese. I can't wait to see what mine says!

Re: PortugueseAdmixture results is not just one country but an area. Therefore Iberian Peninsula is more that just Poruigal. Are you using the K36 Admixture. It is great for Europe but is poor for African and American Indian. I will be uploading a lot of Ivy ethnic information hopefully in the next week. Then as soon as I can get it type will my first common ancestor finding.

Re: PortugueseThis was on 23andMe... they updated their ancestry composition to more specific locations. Under "Iberian Peninsula" I was given "Portugal"; however, they updated again and "Portugal" disappeared. I do still show a small amount of Iberian. On Ancestry I show 8% Iberian. They too are working on an update, so I can't wait to see if they identify my Iberian as Portuguese or Spanish (or Basque).

Re: PortugueseIberian is an area not a country. Portuguese is included in the Iberian map. However there are other areas like France, Spain, and England that are included in the Iberian ethenic group. If I was a betting man I would put my money on Ivey's coming from Scotland. My next email to the Ivey group will include more information.

Re: PortugueseOne of my DNA sites my father & I belong to is yourDNAportal. They recently updated their results and now my father shows both Portuguese and Lumbee (in small amounts). Interesting.
